Is This Year’s Gamecocks Basketball Team A Contender Or Pretender?

Being a South Carolina fan may not be the most rewarding experience.

You probably won’t see many national championships and mediocrity is the norm. The one thing that keeps me coming back is the unpredictability that makes it fun to be a fan.

I think I speak for every South Carolina fan when I say what the hell is this basketball team.

This is a team that can look like a Final Four team one week then look like a bottom tier SEC team the next.

This is a team that beat Virginia, Clemson and Kentucky but lost to Boston University and Stetson at home. These are the types of losses that really hurt their chances at the NCAA tournament.

They’ve struggled with some injuries this year, but it hasn’t been enough to explain these losses. I give Frank Martin credit for rallying these guys when things look bad, but I also think the biggest issue with this team is carrying momentum.

South Carolina somehow beat Clemson and Virginia back to back while looking like a tournament team. They immediately lost to Stetson at home in their non conference finale.

They’re sitting at 2-3 in the SEC, and this team could still go either way. Freshman Jermaine Couisnard has really stepped up recently. He has four straight double-digit point games including 26 points against Kentucky.

The rest of this season looks manageable as the Gamecocks won’t face another ranked team this season. They still have a couple games against tougher SEC opponents like Arkansas and LSU.

I honestly don’t know where this team will end up in March.

The best case scenario is they make the NCAA tournament as a 10 seed at the highest. The worst case scenario is they completely fall apart and miss the postseason again.

I don’t see that happening because Martin is really good at turning this team around.

Realistically, I see this team barely missing out on the NCAA tournament.  I think they’ll make the NIT and finish as a middle tier SEC team.
