The South Carolina Gamecocks hope to carry their momentum over at home against Mississippi State later today
On Saturday, the Gamecocks Men’s basketball team returns home to face Mississippi State. South Carolina is 5-6 on the year, but coming off their best win of the season against #22 Florida. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are 10-9, and coming off a double digit road loss to Arkansas, and have lost four of their last five.
The Gamecocks are merely a one and a half point favorite at home, but it’s not hard to understand why. Anyone who’s watched Carolina basketball this season knows to pay zero attention to the line whatsoever. Carolina is a mere 1-6 against the spread in their last 7 games at the Colonial Life Arena.
Mississippi State is the 2nd best 3 point shooting team in the conference, despite really poor shooting in their last outing vs Arkansas. The Bulldogs yield two of the top five scorers in the SEC. Sophomore Guard DJ Stewart Jr will be looking to bounce back after failing to score in double digits for only the second time all season. The key for the Bulldogs will be the play of their other Sophomore guard, Iverson Molinar. Mississippi State is 5-1 this season when Molinar scores 20 or more.
As for the Gamecocks, they will try to put together back to back solid performances for the first time since beginning conference play. AJ Lawson will look to build off a 22 point outing against the Gators that saw transfer guard Seventh Woods make crucial contributions down the stretch. Both teams are bottom in the SEC in Free Throw percentage, so it will be interesting to see how that comes into play in the second half.
The Gamecocks tip off against the Bulldogs at 3:30pm at CLA.
