The South Carolina Gamecocks Softball team will be opening its season in the UNF Tournament, let’s preview the tourney.
The South Carolina Gamecocks are coming into this softball season with a stacked roster, with re-returning seniors and talented freshman, the Lady Gamecocks can make a postseason push. The Gamecocks currently have 27 ladies on the roster and after finishing last season ranked at 15th, the team has a chance to really show out this year.
According to preseason polls, the Gamecocks softball team sits at a comfortable 19th nationally. This can be due to the four re-returning COVID seniors: Lauren Stewart(.315, 10 RBI), Kenzi Maguire(.328, 9 RBI), Mackenzie Boesel(.317, 11 RBI), and pitcher Cayla Drotar.
Head Coach Beverly Smith stated the following about the roster to GamecocksOnline:
“Our depth really excites me, we’ve got 27 players on the roster; 25 right now because of injury. When you think about the challenges that the season will likely bring with COVID, weather, and everything else, we’ll have a lot more doubleheaders than normal as a result. Our large roster with depth will help us navigate some of that adversity.
Coach Smith continued:
“Specifically, I think our offense looks different. We’ll have versatility in our lineup. We’ve added a lot of left-handed hitters. We added more speed. We have the opportunity to do a lot of different things on the offensive side in terms of the short game and stealing bases. We still have others who can hit for power, too.”
The Carolina Softball team will be extremely good with a lot of talented players, let’s review this weekends matchups.
