16th ranked Gamecocks face off against Winthrop Eagles

After a clean sweep on the opening weekend against the Dayton Flyers, The Gamecocks look to face off against an instate Winthrop team on Tuesday

As Kingston and company cleaned up this past weekend, scoring 29 runs in the three-game series and holding Dayton to only 7 runs on 12 hits, they look to improve to 4-0 on the season. The 16th ranked South Carolina Gamecocks showed that after a sudden finale of last season, everyone was still ready to go.

Designated hitter Wes Clarke had a fantastic start to the season, with a .700 batting average followed by a grand slam from Andrew Eyster.

The pitching staff showed its strength over the weekend, with left-handed pitcher Julian Bosnic setting a school record with eight strikeouts in a row.

The team sets up for a Tuesday afternoon game at Founders Park at 4:00 pm, taking on the Winthrop Eagles, who had a devastating weekend where they lost the series 1-2 against the mountaineers of Appalachian State. The Eagles from Rock Hill allowed 23 hits on the weekend, along with 17 runs and 5 errors on the series.

Winthrop will likely set out with RHP Macklin Ohs (1-0) to face off against freshman RHP Will Sanders in his debut for the Gamecocks. The second-ranked right-handed pitcher from Georgia comes into the game standing 6’6″ and as the 58th best player in the country.

Sanders is set to lead the charge with no expected changes made to the batting lineup. Coach Kingston and the garnet crusaders look to head into the weekend 4-0 as they set to face Clemson in their annual series starting off Friday away and concluding the matchup in their own backyard on Sunday.

The Gamecocks began with a record-breaking series to lead off the 2021 season and must continue to shine before conference play that will begin in a few weeks when Carolina hits the road for Nashville.
