Gamecocks Softball looks to host the Winthrop Eagles in a midweek competition, trying to gain momentum into this weekend’s tournament.
On Wednesday, the South Carolina Gamecocks Softball team will host the Winthrop Eagles (7-5) coming off of a loss on Sunday to the Duke Blue Devils, looking to bounce back heading into the weekend. Winthrop comes in winning 4 of their last 5 games, having pitcher Madyson Watson win Big South co-pitcher of the week for her efforts in 2 appearances, both starting and in relief.
The Gamecocks come into action on Wednesday night riding a 14 game win streak over the Eagles, their last loss coming over 10 years ago in February of 2011.
What to look for
Looking to get the start in the circle, Junior Rachel Vaughan will be looking to start off the season with a 3-0 record, and have another quality start after throwing 6 innings on Saturday and allowing only 1 run In a victory over Seton Hall.
Look for RF Carlie Henderson to continue her hot streak with the bat, going 10-for-21 (.476), 4 being for extra bases. The Freshman looks to add solid contact to the top of the lineup, being asserted in the top spot after showing her potential in early season action.
If South Carolina wants to put away the eagles early, it is important that the bottom of the lineup can get on base. Struggling so far this season, South Carolina has had to rely on hitters 1-5 to be able to get on base. Look for the bottom of the lineup to make early contact and to get on base.
Keys to the game
If the Gamecocks can test the pitching depth of the eagles, they should be in for a fun night. The South Carolina pitching staff outmatches the eagles in both the starting roll and in the bullpen. Putting the bats out early and consistently may result in a short day, getting to the mercy rule after 5 innings. If they can bring solid pitching with that, it will not be a fun ride home for the eagles.
Prediction
South Carolina blows out Winthrop in a one-sided affair, beating them 10-1 after 5 innings.
