Gamecocks Baseball dominates Winthrop Eagles; No “weekend hangover”

In a rematch one week after Gamecocks Baseball took down the Winthrop Eagles, the Eagles prepared to host South Carolina, the rest wasn’t pretty.

The Winthrop Eagles hosted the Gamecocks Baseball team on a cold afternoon yesterday, but the gamecocks came prepared with hot bats scoring 19 runs on 16 hits.

The starting left-handed pitcher Josiah Sightler came prepared to go 3-3 while batting in 3 runs as well. Catcher Wes Clarke had a slow day, going 0-3, but the other 8 in the lineup came in hot with Brady Allen having 4 RBI’s on 3 hits, Joe Satterfield in his first start had a nice start with 3 hits as well on 5 at-bats, and a combined 8 out of 13 Gamecocks making contact for a total of 16 hits. The Eagles gave up 4 errors to none on the Gamecocks side, a first this season.

Pitching for Josiah Sightler was solid striking out 4 Eagles in 11 of their at-bats. Sightler allowed only one run on three hits, having pitched 3 full innings and being only the second Gamecock starting pitcher to record the win this season. The Gamecocks showed their depth in the bullpen unleashing 8 men to the mound with right-handed pitcher Brett Thomas striking out the only 3 batters he faced.

The Winthrop Eagles got to work early with their bats and scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI from their designated hitter Dillon Morton. The Eagles collected 7 hits and scored 7 runs, 5 of which came in the final two innings.

As the Gamecocks laid the Eagles to rest last night at Winthrop Ballpark, they improve to 7-0 on the season. Coach Kingston now must begin preparing the team to face off against the Mercer Bears this weekend. The Bears look to beat the Gamecocks for the first time in their history, as they have not played since a two-game series back in 1989 where they were swept.
