Gamecocks BB: #12 Gamecocks Travel to Charleston to take on an I-26 rival

South Carolina looks to stay unbeaten vs The Citadel following the weekend sweep

After a weekend game sweep of the Mercer Bears, the Gamecocks will hit the road to face their I-26 rivals in a mid-week matchup against the Citadel in preparation to face the 19th ranked Texas Longhorns in a weekend series.

The Bulldogs come into this matchup with a 4-6 record, losing two of three over the weekend to NC A&T. The Gamecocks come in winning four consecutive games over the Bulldogs, and 11 out of the last 10 matchups, looking to extend their streak.

Looking to take the mound on Wednesday is Junior southpaw Josiah Sightler. Coming into Wednesday’s matchup, Sightler is pitching a 3.60 ERA, and racking up 8 strikeouts over 5 total innings pitched, giving up only 2 extra base hits.

Sightler also contributes to the lineup, thus far hitting .364 on the season with 2 Home Runs. Sightler is quickly rising as a fan favorite.

The lineup is coming in on a cold stretch (for this seasons standards) as feature hitters like Wes Clarke and Andrew Eyster are seeing less opportunities at the plate. The weekend hero was Joe Satterfield, notching 3 RBIs and really coming from nowhere for the Cocks.

Contributions from smaller name guys will be crucial to the success of he team as the featured players will be pitched around.

What To Watch For

Look for the Gamecocks pithing to continue to dominate after a dominant weekend performance, allowing only one run over 27 innings pitched. Although they may be throwing in younger guys for the midweek game, still expect The Bulldogs to find difficulties scoring runs, as the Gamecocks pitching outmatches the Citadel lineup.

Over the weekend, the Gamecocks hitting struggled vs a decent Mercer pitching staff, only scoring 10 runs over 3 games. The Gamecocks will look to bring the bats on Wednesday, looking to get back on track with a big performance.

It is also great for the Gamecocks to get road experience, as they will travel to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns this weekend.

Although you should never take an opponent lightly, the Bulldogs will be an easy takedown in rout to the crucial 3 game set over the weekend, as the Gamecocks will look to save veteran arms. Look for young guys to get experience and pitch for the Gamecocks

Although the Gamecocks will be throwing younger arms on Wednesday, the power of the lineup will put the Bulldogs away early, as South Carolina beats the Citadel.

South Carolina 11, The Citadel 4
