Got to give credit where credit is due. South Carolina put up a good performance against the Bulldogs on Saturday. The Gamecocks outscored UGA 80-68 and outscored the bulldogs in both halves of basketball.
South Carolina greatly improved their shooting compared to the past two games against Tennessee and Kentucky with a 51% Field goal percentage and 40% from behind the line.
Although South Carolina’s Tournament chances are virtually non existent, it appears the team is unwilling to give up on the season just yet.
Sure, the Georgia Bulldogs are at the Bottom of the barrel of the SEC with six total wins and zero conference wins. However, the Bulldogs have showed serious improvement in the past week.
Georgia was literally a missed three point shot away from upsetting #1 ranked Auburn a week ago. The very next game, the Bulldogs lost by single to digits to the Florida Gators in Gainesville.
A team that could very well find themselves in the NCAA Tournament. South Carolina on the other hand was coming off a three game losing streak, shooting below 50% in all three contests.
This game appeared all too familiar from the start. Personally, I was preparing for a devastating loss as the Dawgs seemed to be on the come up while the Gamecocks looked to be deteriorating.
Had Carolina lost, their season would have been in shambles to say the least. Handing Georgia their first SEC win would have been nothing short of embarrassing for the program as a whole.
However, the Gamecocks prevailed, beating Georgia by a comfortable 12 points on the road.
A win against Georgia does not hint at the Gamecocks winning out or having an SEC tournament run. It instead proves that Carolina has not yet hung up their shoes and they may very well put up a fight in each of their remaining games.
Carolina fans should be willing to celebrate these type of wins. Your team hasn’t given up yet so why should you give up on them?
Perhaps the team could surprise us all with an outstanding conclusion. Maybe they’ll lose out.
Regardless, fans should support the team if they’re going to show that they aren’t yet finished with the season.
