None of us wanted to be in a position where we’re celebrating losses, but in Carolina basketball’s current state, it really is appropriate.
Although the Gamecocks acquired several key transfers along with 5 star GG Jackson, they have struggled immensely in SEC play this season. For weeks now, it appears as if they have the puzzle pieces, and they simply can’t find away to get the puzzle together. That is until lately.
The Gamecocks hosted the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday, and just about won the ball game. Obviously, South Carolina needs to find a way to improve in clutch moments, but they fact they were in the situation to begin with is a positive. Not something many were expecting.
Tuesday night, the Gamecocks really hung around with a good Missouri team. Until late in the 2nd half, the scoreline was a one possession difference. That was until Mizzou finally pulled away. Even then, the Tigers took a single digit win, something we haven’t seen too often with this Carolina team in SEC play.
Carolina has struggled immensely in SEC play this season, losing a majority of their matchups by double digits, and several of them by 20+ points. Like it or not, the main focus for this team under 1st year coach Lamont Paris (at this point), needs to be improvement on a weekly basis. So far, the Gamecocks have done that.
Before Arkansas, the Gamecocks were out of most contests by the 2nd half. In the last two games, they’ve competed, and have given themselves a chance to win.
Just a few weeks ago, I didn’t see us winning another game this season. Now, I’m excited to play Ole Miss, Georgia, and LSU. We might just have a shot! Hopefully this team can keep up the intensity and finish up this season on a strong note.
